A Winter Wonderland: My Visit to Gulmarg**

**A Winter Wonderland: My Visit to Gulmarg**

Nestled in the scenic hills of Kashmir, Gulmarg is a breathtaking hill station that offers an unparalleled winter experience. Known for its lush meadows, towering snow-covered peaks, and vibrant culture, Gulmarg is one of the top winter destinations in India. During my last trip to this beautiful destination, it was its snow-crested beauty, smooth landscapes, and the warmth of the locals that swept me off my feet. Here is a glimpse into my unforgettable adventure in the winter wonderland of Gulmarg.

### The Journey to Gulmarg: A Road Through Snowy Hills

Reaching Gulmarg was in itself a magical experience. I was coming from Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, which is approximately 50 kilometers from Gulmarg. The winding roads that went through the rolling hills changed the landscape from green fields to snow-covered terrain as we climbed into winter. It was a peaceful journey with scenic views of small villages, frozen rivers, and snow-laden trees that made every twist and turn an adventure.

The roads to Gulmarg were still in great condition, but the winter snowfalls do have a delaying effect on it. But the view of white snow covering everything in vision was well worthwhile all the time spent on the roads. By the time I approached Gulmarg, the snowfall increased its intensity, and I could already feel the thrill building up inside me.

### The Beauty of Gulmarg: A Snow-Laden Paradise

Upon arrival, Gulmarg lived up to its reputation as one of the most picturesque destinations I have ever visited. The name "Gulmarg" means "Meadow of Flowers," and though the flowers weren’t in bloom during the winter, the snow-covered meadows more than made up for it. The vast open spaces, flanked by dense forests of pine and fir, created a postcard-perfect scene that seemed straight out of a fairy tale.

The snow-covered slopes and the crisp, clean air made me feel that I had entered another world. The majesty of the snow-capped mountains that surrounded Gulmarg was simply awe-inspiring. Everywhere I looked, there was something beautiful to behold — be it the untouched snowfields, the icy streams, or the view of Mount Apharwat looming majestically over the town.

### A Gondola Ride to the Sky

One of the highlights of my visit to Gulmarg was the famous Gulmarg Gondola. The ride of the cable car is one of the highest in the world, offering spectacular views of the whole region from panoramic windows. I boarded the gondola from the base station and slowly rose above the white scenery. I enjoyed the bird's-eye view of the meadows, forests, and faraway mountains. As we ascended higher, the view was more beautiful.

The gondola has two phases: Phase 1 will take you to the Kongdoori station, and Phase 2 will take you up to the Apharwat Peak. The second phase is exciting as it reaches a height of more than 13,000 feet where snow, peace, and serenity prevail. Standing on Apharwat Peak, I got a 360-degree view of the entire Kashmir valley — an awe-inspiring view that is as humbling. ### Skiing and Snow Sports: A Thrill Seekers' Paradise

Gulmarg is one of the best skiing destinations in India. The slopes of the Apharwat range are perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports, making it a haven for adventure enthusiasts. I decided to give skiing a try, and it was exhilarating!

Be you an amateur or a professional, slopes suitable for all your skills range, and instructors are also available for trainees. The sensations of gliding past the fresh powder snow with the majestic mountains at the background is something that I would never forget. For those who do not enjoy skiing or snowboarding there is even snowshoeing and sledging. Gulmarg is definitely a dream for the adventure lover.

### Meandering across the Meadows, the Winter on Feet

The skis and gondola ride were great experiences; however, the best pastime in Gulmarg, to my taste, was walking along the snow. It was one such winter wonderland as far as my eyes could see. White spread miles on both sides, the feeling of stillness and peacefulness. I could see the undisturbed fallen soft snow gleam under the rays of sun while passing through them as if crossing some winter land.

As I strolled, local Kashmiri shepherds tending to their sheep and horses passed by me; this added to the authenticity of the experience. Gulmarg had a peaceful ambiance with crisp clean air and muffled silence in the snow that made me deeply connected to nature.

### The Local Culture: Warmth in the Cold

Gulmarg may be a world-famous resort destination, but it still manages to hold an air of a small town. Kashmiris are also very warm and hospitable people, and wherever I went, smiling faces welcomed me with offers of hot Kahwa-the traditional Kashmiri tea-to warm up. Everywhere I walked, colorful handicrafts, pashmina shawls, and intricately designed carpets adorned the markets.

I spent some time in the local shops, talking to the shopkeepers and learning about the rich history and culture of the region. The people of Gulmarg are not only welcoming but also proud of their heritage, and I enjoyed hearing their stories about life in this beautiful part of the world.

### Cuisine of Gulmarg: A Taste of Kashmir

Kashmiri food is a complete blend of spice and flavor, but I was quite lucky to relish some dishes that are as traditional as they come. From Rogan Josh, the most iconic of all Kashmiri dishes, to the spicy, pungent Yakhni, the food presented itself as quite a feast. I also did try some other local specialties-the aromatic Dum Aloo and ever-popular Kahwa tea; the warmth in the food paired with the freezing weather made everything a comforting treat.

For those with a sweet tooth, the Kashmiri desserts of Phirni and Sheer Kurma are a must-try. These dishes are rich, aromatic, and perfect for enjoying by the fireplace after a long day of exploring the snow-covered town.

### A Perfect Getaway: The Magic of Gulmarg

Gulmarg is not merely a destination for winter sports or adventure enthusiasts. It is that place which offers an experience of serenity, peace, and beauty very difficult to be found elsewhere. Whether one is skiing down the slopes or taking a ride on the gondola up to the peaks or simply walking in the snowed meadows of Gulmarg, it feels more like a dream.

Gulmarg is one of the perfect getaways for anyone looking to escape the ordinary and immerse themselves in the serenity of the mountains. It offers stunning natural beauty, the thrill of winter sports, and the warm hospitality of the people.
