Perched on the fertile banks of the Ganges, the ancient city of Pataliputra—modern-day Patna in Bihar—stands as a timeless testament to India's rich history and cultural heritage. My recent visit to this legendary city was a journey not just through geography but through time itself.

Tracing the History

Pataliputra was once the capital of mighty empires such as the Mauryas and the Guptas. As I roamed through its historical sites, I could not help but imagine the grandeur of a city that served as the political, cultural, and intellectual hub of ancient India. Founded by Ajatashatru in the 5th century BCE, the city reached its zenith during the reign of Emperor Ashoka, whose legacy of governance and Buddhism resonates across the world.

Kumhrar: Glimpses of an Empire

First Stop, the Kumhrar Archaeological site: I had the remnant of the Mauryan palace. This contained the very famous Assembly Hall with a beautifully symmetrical structure containing 80 pillars. The shining sandstone pillars, as in ruins today, give some idea about the architectural skill of that time. If there, one can almost imagine the murmur of thoughts in the corridors of scholars and statesmen discussing the policies that directed the history of India for centuries to come.

Ashokan Pillars: Icons of Enlightenment

The Ashokan Pillar in Patna is a stunning testament to the reign of Emperor Ashoka and his conversion to Buddhism. Inscribed with edicts on moral governance, compassion, and religious tolerance, these pillars are more than artifacts of history; they are icons of a philosophy that endures. I stood there, in awe, reading words meant to guide humanity thousands of years ago, yet remain relevant today.
