A city of romance, grandeur, and timeless beauty, Udaipur, set amidst the Aravalli hills in Rajasthan, entices all. Known poetically as the "City of Lakes" and the "Venice of the East," Udaipur is more famous for its breathtakingly beautiful palaces, lakes that seem so silent, and cultural heritage so rich. Recently, it was a joy to have toured this lovely city, which magnetized my heart with its poise and warmth. So here's a glimpse of my unforgettable journey to Udaipur.

The first glimpse is indeed the best one. The arrival in Udaipur did just that for me when I was held captivated by its character and charm. It has whitewashed buildings, bustling markets, and peaceful lakes-all alluring together to be in a city that is at once serene and lively. Udaipur is something of a place that mixes together traditional Rajasthani culture with modern amenities, so it is sure to satisfy both those in search of adventure and those looking to unwind.

1. City Palace- A Marvel of Architecture
My first visit was to the magnificent City Palace, one of the biggest royal complexes in Rajasthan. Built over nearly 400 years by different Maharanas, this palace rests in the lap of Lake Pichola and stands with a marvellous view of the city. As I roamed through its grand courtyards, intricately carved balconies, and fabulous rooms adorned with mirrors and murals, it made me feel like I belonged to the bygone era of royalty and luxury.

The museum in the palace houses its own history, including royal memorabilia and miniature paintings, and even the most intricate weaponry. Standing atop the terraces of the palace, I enjoyed a panoramic view of shimmering lakes in Udaipur as well as the Aravalli hills surrounding it-a sight that will stay with me for years to come.

2. Lake Pichola and the Iconic Lake Palace
No visit to Udaipur is complete without taking a boat ride on Lake Pichola, which forms the heart and soul of the city. The still waters of the lake surround ancient buildings. My boat ride took me past Jag Mandir and took me to the Taj Lake Palace. That, incidentally, is a luxury hotel in the middle of the lake.

Built in the 18th century, Lake Palace seems to float on water, a view of which is simply captivating. Though the palace serves as a hotel, the boat ride around it leaves one with many photo opportunities and gives one a feel of the luxury that defines Udaipur.

3. Jagdish Temple: Spirituality and Art
The Jagdish Temple is located nearby at a walkable distance from the City Palace. It's a temple of Lord Vishnu built in the 17th century and is one of the excellent examples of Indo-Aryan architecture. There are intricately carved pillars, statues of gods and goddesses, and fascinating sculptures about scenes from Hindu mythology that decorate the whole temple.

A serene ambiance, mixed with the rhythmic recitations of the devotees, sets in that holy atmosphere. A beautiful abode to pause and reflect upon the mastery of ancient craftsmen building it.

4. Saheliyon Ki Bari: The Garden of Maidens
After walking through much of the city's history in architecture, I wanted something peaceful, and the Saheliyon Ki Bari delivered. This lovely garden was built by Maharana Sangram Singh for the ladies of the palace and their maids. It's easy to see why queens and princesses of Udaipur have always found it an attraction to come away to this complex of fountains, marble pavilions, lotus pools, and lush green lawns.

The beauty of this garden lies in its very simplicity and elegance. A treat to be here, it offers the experience of the smell of blooming lotus plants, a view of water fountains, and is ideal for a leisurely walk or quiet time in solitude.
5. Monsoon Palace: Birds Eye View from the Top Hill
Perched atop a hill looking out over Udaipur, next on my list was the Monsoon Palace - Sajjangarh Palace. The palace was started by Maharana Sajjan Singh but was intended as a monsoon retreat for the royal family. The City Palace itself isn't more impressive than that palace, but the wide-open views of Udaipur and the surrounding countryside that open from the top give their own argument for the climb.

Great decision in coming around sunset - the view from the palace before the sun dips below the Aravalli hills into the lakes and city below is breathtaking, casting a warm glow everywhere.

6. Shopping and Local Cuisine in Udaipur
No visit to Udaipur is ever complete if the markets and culinary delights are not explored. A wonderful place boasts the noisiest, most colorful markets of Hathi Pol, Bada Bazaar, and Shilpgram, which have really exclusive handicrafts, beautiful colored textiles, traditional jewelry, and miniature paintings for which Udaipur is very famous.

The food in Udaipur is wonderful with a mix of Rajasthani and Mewari cuisine. I relished dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, and ker sangri, which was considered to be locals' favorite. I simply could not resist malpua and ghewar to make it sweet and delicious. Each dish was a perfect explosion of flavors that depicted richness through Rajasthani cuisine.

7. Evening at Ambrai Ghat: Serenity by the Lake
The day end by heading to Ambrai Ghat on the Lake Pichola. One can really have a surreal experience while watching the City Palace and the Lake Palace lit up during the evening hours. The reflections of the buildings on still Lake waters create a breathtakingly beautiful scene to unwind for the day after a day full of discovery.

The Ambrai restaurant nearby presents a magical location to have dinner lakeside, having food from the locality and from around the world, while savoring the City Palace beautifully lit down and the lake.

Each visitor has been captivated by the rich history, architectural wonders, and serene lakes of the city of Udaipur. This is one journey that may be both romantic and deep. It may be about exploring grand palaces, strolling through peaceful gardens, or savoring local cuisine-well, this is a city that will attract anyone interested in history, culture, and natural beauty.
